Archduchess Leopoldine was the only female member of the Habsburg dynasty who was forced into a marriage overseas for reasons of state. Her life in Brazil was not always either straightforward or happy, and in a very short space of time she experienced both extreme happiness and the deepest despair. She played a decisive role in helping Brazil to gain independence and stood alongside her husband to become the first Empress of Brazil. Much loved by the Brazilian people, especially the poor, who called her ‘nossa mãe’ (‘our mother’), she nevertheless suffered from homesickness and a sense of isolation, stranded in a far-off land and almost forgotten by her family in Austria.
