The historical capital of Tyrol has always benefited from its location at the intersection of important routes of communication: the Inn Valley running from west to east and the highway leading to the Brenner Pass, the most important north-south route in the eastern Alps.
This strategic position determined the history of the city, which from the time Tyrol was acquired by the dynasty in 1363 became an important arena of Habsburg history. Emperor Maximilian I is the most prominent of the Habsburgs who left their mark on the city.
