Owned by Crown Prince Rudolf, this pair of lederhosen is intended to stand as a symbol for the attempts made by certain Habsburgs to shed the robes of state and at least for a time to escape from their allotted roles as members of the imperial family.
The Habsburgs spent some of their leisure time hunting, a sport where for a short while they could reduce the social distance between themselves and the people who accompanied them. On private journeys they travelled incognito in order to spare themselves official ceremony. With some Habsburgs the desire to have control over the planning of their lives was so strong that they were willing to forgo their dynastic privileges.
