In the fifteenth century Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing technique which combined all the methods commonly used before then in one work process. The technique, which employed movable letters, came to be used in the whole of Europe within a matter of decades and had a lasting impact on printing. This simplified process played a key role in spreading books and other matter in printed form throughout Europe. The letterpress printing machines, which were made of wood, were used until well into the nineteenth century.
