Known popularly as the ‘handsome archduke’, Otto owed his notoriety to his philandering, scandal-ridden lifestyle. After the suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf in 1889, he advanced in the line of succession and in view of the poor health of the presumptive heir, his brother, Franz Ferdinand, was regarded more or less as the future emperor.
Otto was married to Maria Josefa of Saxony – the marriage produced the last Austrian emperor, Karl I. In addition, Otto had further children from extra-marital affairs. He died from the effects of syphilis.
